Fundamentals Of Power System Protection

Y. G. PAITHANKAR, Ph.D., formerly Professor and Head of Electrical Engineering Department at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, is an accomplished teacher with over 30 years of experience in the field of power systems. He has published about 15 papers in international journals. He is the author of Transmission Network Protection: Theory and Practice (1998), published by Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York.

S. R. BHIDE, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, where he has been serving since 1984. His special areas of interest include application techniques of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to power system protection schemes.

"The electric power system is a highly complex and dynamic entity. One malfunction or a carelessly set relay can jeopardize the entire grid. Power system protection as a subject offers all the elements of intrigue, drama, and suspense while handling fault conditions in real life. The book reflects many years of experience of the authors in teaching this subject matter to undergraduate electrical engineering students.

The book, now in its second edition, continues to provide the most relevant concepts and techniques in power system protection. The second edition offers a new chapter on circuit breakers to further strengthen the text and meet the curriculum needs of several universities. Both, students and teachers, will find the book stimulating as it contains around 300 well-annotated figures and numerous tables. It also includes 20 quiz sets consisting of about 200 multiple-choice questions to test the students’ understanding of the concepts discussed.

Written in a simple, clear and down-to-earth style, this state-of-the-art text covers the entire spectrum of protective relays—from electromechanical to numerical—for protection of transmission lines, transformers, busbars, generators, and motors. The presentation is stimulating, analytical but at the same time concise. The students will find the material very friendly and refreshingly simple.

The book has a wealth of useful figures, graphs, and block diagrams to help the students assimilate the concepts discussed and develop practical orientation.

The Snake And The Rope

Science claims to be objective and to deal only with proven facts, but innumerable conflicting theories that science propounds remain unresolved. In this original and well-illustrated book, the author, an engineer and musician, argues with ample supporting evidence that since time immemorial the universal secret wisdom of the Adepts, known as Occult Science, has had answers to all unresolved problems. How is occult wisdom imparted and what qualifications are needed; how occult science explains Divinity, Space and Time, Energy and Matter, and the role of Sound and Light in manifesting the Cosmos — and many other fascinating topics — are explained by the author. He also makes predictions about the future course of science and suggests how science and occult science may be harmonized.

Refrigeration And Air Conditioning

Late Dr. RAMESH CHANDRA ARORA, served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur from 1987 to 2005. He joined IIT Kharagpur in 1975 as a lecturer after obtaining his Ph.D. degree in the same year from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Professor Arora was regarded as a highly competent subject matter expert in academia and industry alike. His research areas included fluid mechanics, heat transfer, refrigeration and air conditioning, and alternative refrigerants and thermodynamic cycles.

During his illustrious career, Professor Arora was the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, national scholarships, merit awards, and graduate fellowship. He is credited with 91 research publications, 8 technical reports, 19 industrial projects and 3 pending patents.

This textbook offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to theoretical principles and practical aspects of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Written by an outstanding teacher with 30 years of distinguished career at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, this work created by late Dr. R.C. Arora (1945–2005) is intended to lead students to a deeper understanding and a firm grasp of the basic principles of this fast-growing and exciting subject area. This text is ideally suited for undergraduate education in mechanical engineering programmes and specialized postgraduate education in thermosciences. The book is designed to typically appeal to those who like a more rigorous presentation.

The text begins by reviewing, in a simple and precise manner, the physical principles of three pillars of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, namely thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Following an overview of the history of refrigeration, subsequent chapters provide exhaustive coverage of the principles, applications and design of several types of refrigeration systems and their associated components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion devices. Refrigerants too, are studied elaboratively in an exclusive chapter.

The second part of the book, beginning with the historical background of air conditioning in Chapter 15, discusses the subject of psychrometrics being at the heart of understanding the design and implementation of air conditioning processes and systems, which are subsequently dealt with in Chapters 16 to 23. It also explains the design practices followed for cooling and heating load calculations.

Each chapter contains several worked-out examples that clarify the material discussed and illustrate the use of basic principles in engineering applications. Each chapter also ends with a set of few review questions to serve as revision of the material learned.
